Even if it is a 1 minute part that's still one hour run time. Plus set-up, program,
purchasing material, packing etc, etc. All time added up, got to be 3 hrs plus
and with material cost, electricity, and packing supplies, about $40 is available
for profit. Has it gotten so bad someone who owns shop equipment is going to
charge a $13.33 hr shop rate in the USA? I am just hoping the quote was a
mistake, or our time as machinists is worth next to nothing anymore.

Mad Machinist, Are you awarding this job purely on low price bid?

Your .pdf is hard to read, I did not see the internal work required I thought it was just a thru hole. This job is for a sub spindle machine to finish the back side. If you can get these in the that volume for under $10.00 each you better jump on it.

Price is 90% of the decision here as this is eventually a cheap item in the eyes of the final buyers. I used to sell them for $20 a piece ( Incl S&H) when making em manual ( now thats desperation) and final users were bitching about the price. I Have to be able to sell these at 1/4 price to get any demand. But I am not going with the cheapest bidder.

Contract, you can do like I did. make a batch of blanks .5" longer for gripping. Bore the big straight bore .500 deeper than the prints say. get em all done and use a collet stop and start on the other end. No need for sub spindle machine.
