I have a customer that is punching a hole thru 1/4" steel plates.
His print shows the punch with a .626 body and a .203 tip with a .075 point sticking out .05. My question is what type of material should be used to make the punch and how hard should it be heat treated to. Thanks in advance for your thoughts. Stan |

I'm betting the .075 dia sticking out .05 is an oil breaker. (Spring loaded pin to keep the punch from pulling slugs.) My first choice for this item would be to purchase it from Danley or Dayton in M2 high speed steel.

I agree, you can probably acquire a punch pre-made for less than it may cost to make it. Also if it is just Standard tooling there should be a lot of sources for used tooling at an even better prices.
