Dxf or pdf will usually work for a fab shop to make parts from.

But

Rapid prototyping is done by a printer (of sorts) that makes plastic (in some cases) parts. These parts are full 3D. These machines use stl files only.
Although most places with a rapid proto machine will have design software and be able to work with almost any 3d solid models.

Rapid prototyping is no longer limited to sterolithography! I work for a company that focuses primarily on formed sheet metal parts (not necessarily bent). We build special tooling, laser blanks, draw or form parts, post mill or drill and tap, finish (plate or paint) and can ship in 1-2 days. Our "normal" turnaround is 6-8 business days. We also do machined prototypes, and turn them around in the same time frame. We provide the quote usually the same day!! The key to this whole process is, the customer provides the solid model during the quoting process. We utilize softwares that builds to the customer model, very seldom using a print!!
